Audiobooks are voice recordings of books.
The Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT) at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) has developed an application where scanned books can be converted into Audiobooks in mp3 format without the need for a human narrator or reader. This application fills the critical gap of providing relevant library services to blind or visually challenged people. Its use in schools, colleges and workplaces will empower thousands of visually impaired persons in performing better.
We provide audiobooks free of cost to the proposed users. We currently have audiobooks for Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam languages, and intend to expand this to all Indian languages.
In the past, we have worked with a few volunteering organizations and schools to make audiobooks available to school children. We are a part of the Government of India’s project to build a library of millions of books and would like to work with volunteers, NGOs, Non-Profit Organizations, and the industry in developing assistive technology and tools for the visually challenged. We also seek collaborators who are interested in building a focused book collection.
