Finding a Home at CVIT
Before joining IIIT-H, Raghavendra pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Utah. Originally from Bangalore, he had set his sights on opportunities in Southern India. IIIT-H’s solid academic reputation and dynamic research environment made it a compelling choice for him. CVIT became his first full-time academic position, and it did not take long for him to fall in love with the campus.
“Despite being situated in a busy area, the campus is incredibly calm and cozy,” he shares. “Everyone—faculty, staff, and students—has been very welcoming and warm. It’s a beautiful place to work and grow.”
A Passion for Scientific Data Visualization
Raghavendra’s core research lies in the area of scientific data visualization, a domain that blends data, graphics, and computation to make complex information more comprehensible. His interest in education and curiosity about research started early, guiding his academic path toward this highly specialized and impactful field.
Inspired by Mentorship
His decision to pursue research and eventually become a professor was influenced significantly by his advisor during his student days. “I was always interested in the educational field,” he explains. “My advisor earned respect not just for his intellect but for how he communicated and conducted his research. I wanted to follow that path.”
The Joys of Being a Professor
For Raghavendra, teaching is not just a profession—it’s a passion. What excites him the most is the independence the role offers and the opportunity to interact with new, enthusiastic minds each year.
“These interactions keep me on my toes,” he says. “They help me stay updated, engaged, and motivated.”
His Teaching Philosophy
In an era with an abundance of online resources, Raghavendra believes that a classroom should offer more than just textbook knowledge.
“There are more resources available now, both theoretical and practical. So, it becomes a challenge—and an opportunity—for me to constantly update myself and give students something fresh. I want them to walk away thinking, ‘This is something I didn’t see elsewhere.’"
Guidance for Students: Staying Motivated Through the Highs and Lows
Research is a demanding journey with its own set of ups and downs. Raghavendra encourages students to stay consistent and not delay completing basic academic qualifications, especially given the age limits attached to many fellowships.
“Industry can wait—focus on laying your research foundation early. Try to solve a problem that nobody else is working on. It’s okay even if your advisor doesn’t have direct experience in that area. That’s how you learn and grow,” he advises.
He also emphasizes the importance of open communication, peer networking, and meeting with advisors regularly. “Don’t hide your struggles. Be honest and upfront. That’s how solutions come about. Ignoring problems only leads to delays.”
Creating a Safe and Professional Advisor-Student Dynamic
Raghavendra is fully aware that students may hesitate to reach out to their advisors for fear of being judged. He strives to create a welcoming and professional space where students feel safe to share their struggles.
“Whether or not there’s progress, just come and talk to me. Let’s be honest about the effort and results. Mistakes happen, delays occur—and that’s okay. What matters is that we talk about it and move forward.”
His approach to mentorship focuses on calmness, professionalism, and comfort, aiming to foster a relationship where productivity and learning go hand in hand.
Looking Ahead
As he begins his academic journey at IIIT-H, Raghavendra is not just bringing his expertise in visualization to the table—he is bringing a thoughtful, student-centric approach to education and mentorship. His commitment to staying updated, respect for student comfort, and belief in honest communication set a strong foundation for meaningful academic relationships and impactful research.
